Laughter is said to be the best medicine. Although it cannot cure diseases like cancer, it boosts a patient’s will to live. That is what Strathmore University Community Outreach Program club members discovered when they visited a children’s ward at Kenyatta National Hospital on December 3rd. The children for the most part had no families. [...]

The students took one lesson from the kids: that they need not complain much, and should rather learn to count their blessings.

The visit was a part of the students’ curriculum community service program.

Their arrival at the wards was met with a lot of cheer, with the children running towards them and embracing them. Their names became irrelevant as word ‘Teacher’ became the word for the day.

“Each one of us was clung onto by a tender hand, and taken for a tour around the ward, regardless of whether one was familiar with the place or not. The place was just buzzing with activity,” said COP’s Michael Babu.

The children’s ward transformed to a playground with songs, laughter and joyful shouts filling the air. There was no holding back, and the kids’ energy was a hard act to follow for the students!

The experience was a journey down memory lane for the students under the stewardship of the kids, as nursery rhymes became the plaything for the day. Evidently, most of the students struggled to remember the words of the rhymes and fell back to humming.

Some of the abandoned children are adolescents and lack basics such as sanitary supplies. The visiting students mobilized funds and bought some.

There were many more heart-rending tales. But these are best appreciated during a visit. And COP invites all students and staff to the next visit.

Students and staff can also help in other ways. COP is currently collecting donations of cash and kind. The donations will be distributed to the needy. Donation boxes are located at the main entrances of the University’s buildings.

The main aim of the project is to partner with secondary schools in marginal areas of Kenya in order to develop and support the delivery of Computer Studies offered as part of the Kenya Certificate of Secondary School Examination (KCSE) curriculum.

In May 2009, the project received a $100,000 from the HP Innovations in Education Grant, and an additional $15,000 from the Internet Society (www.isoc.org). In its second year, the project also received funding and support from Google ($20,000), and Safaricom Kenya ($4,000).

The project involves five schools located in marginal areas in or around Nairobi. The schools were Moi Girls Secondary School - Isinya, and Olkejuado High School in Kajiado County; Machakos Girls High School in Machakos County; and Gatanga High School, Kahuhia Girls High School in Muranga County.

High school students taking Computer Studies are expected to learn and develop practical ICT skills. In the final year of study, the students are expected to develop a complete software project using a recommended set of tools and programming languages.

However, schools in marginal areas have limited, outdated or non- existent ICT infrastructure; inadequate teaching capacity, and constrained financial resources. In addition, these schools are also located in areas of low economic activity with attendant socio-economic challenges including the discrimination of the girl-child.

The project team comprised of five lecturers and 20 IT undergraduate students from the Faculty of Information Technology. In February 2010, then world number one tennis player and HP Goodwill Ambassador Serena Williams visited the University to meet members of the project team.

Undergraduate students have made more than 60 visits to the schools to mentor and support Computer Studies pupils. Among other activities, the students assist in programming project supervision and encourage the girls to take up computer studies as their future careers.

Lecturers visit to schools to give motivational talks to the high school students. Under the project, about 60 Computer Studies teachers and school administrators attended a National Computer Studies Teachers Conference at the University in November 2010.

The Rural Cafe project, an offline web access tool for use in schools without internet access was installed in the 5 participating schools with very impressive results. The project was a joint effort with Prof Jay Chen of New York University.

The tool has 300GB of Computer Science Education Resources crawled from the Internet. For more details, see: http://code.google.com/p/ruralcafe/wiki/Introduction.

In January 2010, over 200 high school students participated in an Open Day event at the university under the project. The aim of the event was to create interest in Computer Science among the students, especially girls.

The University entered the project in the ACU PR, Marketing and Communications Awards 2011 competition. The judges were pleased with the project’s overall strength and clear focus on student outreach.

They also said it had innovative and successful third party engagement and direct use of student volunteers. It also made use of supporting events and activities like open days, school visits, and use of HP equipment and ambassadors.

Congratulating the University on winning the award, Ms Dorothy Garland, ACU’s Director of Professional Networks said the University won in a particularly strong category of the competition.

With time, Ken came to love negotiating and getting results. Now, he is proud to introduce: LEO GREEN LIFE CRAFTS!

Leo Green Life Crafts is a business that makes brown paper from organic wastes. It then crafts different kinds of products from this paper. Its products can be seen on its website. Those products are ideal for artifacts used to decorate living spaces, offices, homes, hotels and schools.

The business has focused on environmental conservation. That is why it only deals with organic wastes. “Some people advise us to engage in recycling paper but that would be encouraging production of more paper from trees so we can get material for recycling,” Ken stresses.

Leo Green Life Crafts has a direct impact on the community it operates. The production process has created jobs for young men in Gatina, in Kibera slums. “We also run mentorship programs across all ages and we have managed to get some of the boys back to school,” Ken says.

The young men are taken through various life skills to enable them cope with the many challenges that life presents. “We further started a football club for the younger boys aged 12 to 18 years to provide a platform for mentorship. We have followed them closely to build relations. Leo Green Life is based in the community and this is what drives it,” Ken insists.

“I look forward to a time when all the young men involved in this project will be competing for places out in the world without feeling intimidated and lacking qualifications. My goal is to instill the lost purpose, dreams and ambitions back to the lives of these very able men,” Ken proclaims.

Marriot Corporation is set to open a hotel in Kenya. Speaking during a visit to the University on Thursday November 24th, Mr. Robert Gary Dodds, the Vice President – Human Resources Middle East and Africa said Marriot will open hotels in Kenya and that the preliminary work on the hotels was nearing completion.

Mr. Dodds was accompanied by Marriot’s Director of Talent Management in Middle East and Africa Mr. Sayed Haggag. Mr. Haggag gave a brief on Marriot’s history, careers, training opportunities, and philosophy to some final year students in the School of Management and Commerce (SMC).

Most of the students were drawn from SMC’s Centre for Hospitality and Tourism. Apart from Kenya, Marriot plans to open hotels in Rwanda, Cameroon, and Benin. Marriot sees Kenyans taking a leading role in providing managers to lead these hotels because of the country’s robust education system.

Both Mr. Dodds and Mr. Haggag described Marriot’s corporate culture which puts its staff first. “In Marriots, we don’t use the word staff. We use associates,” Mr. Haggag said.

Mr. Dodds said Marriot would be happy to partner with the University as the two institutions share core values of the dignity of a person and spirit of service. Watch out for Marriot’s stand at the University’s Career Fair on February 3rd!

“The core values established by the Marriott family over 80 years ago have served our company well and will continue to guide our growth into the future. Foremost of these core values is the enduring belief that our associates are our greatest assets,” reads Marriot’s website.

For the fourth year running, Marriott was this year named as one of the World’s Most Ethical Companies for engaging in business practices and initiatives that are instrumental to its success, benefitting the community, and raising the bar for ethical standards within the industry.

Marriott has grown from two employees in 1927 to over 300,000 today. “We’ve expanded from a nine-stool root beer stand to about 3700 hotels in 71 countries. We’ve been able to do this because of our core values one of which is conducting business with integrity,” says Bill Marriot Jr., the Chairman of Marriot Corporation and son of the founder of Marriot chain of hotels.

Q: You are involved in cutting-edge research on the effects of HIV and anti-retroviral Treatments (HAART) in children. People reading this might be asking: Is the Kenya medical scene in a position to employ your expertise?
A: While Kenya is sadly one of the countries bearing the brunt of HIV epidemic and third world politics, the country still plays its role as a leading light in fighting the disease, especially in provision of avenues for conducting world leading research. The relative social and professional standing may be lagging behind that of developed countries in some regard, but Kenya possesses massive potential, and I believe that these innovative advances are still relevant and applicable both in Kenya and the world over.

A: Our Principal investigator in the US is Dr Andre van der Kouwe from the Massachusetts General Hospital Radiology and Physics. He is an Assistant Professor at Harvard Medical School. Another key figure is Dr David Salat who is an Assistant Professor in Radiology at Harvard Medical School and also works at Massachusetts General Hospital Radiology and Physics Radiology)

A: It is quite boring actually, but sometimes this is beneficial after 4 hours of sleep. For most of my work days, I am usually crouched over my desktop PC doing some processing or analyzing my data.

Once or twice a week, I travel to the Cape University’s Brain Imaging Centre at Tygerberg Hospital in Cape Town to oversee the MRI scanning of our study subjects. This can get quite tricky with 5 year olds since they move a lot and can get quite claustrophobic (they fear closed spaces), but a lot of work has gone into adding motion tracking and correction into our MRI sequences.

Today Strathmore launched a new partnership with the American conglomerate General Electric Company. The partnership will develop graduate and post graduate recruitment program, student career development program, and training.

Speaking at the launch, GE’s Chief Finance Officer for Africa, Mr. Thomas Konditi (also chair of Strathmore University Foundation and a Strath grad himself), spoke highly of Strathmore and cited the University’s’ commitment to excellence and high academic standards as the reason why GE choose it as a working partner in its growth in Kenya and Africa at large.

“This year, our Africa operation recruited five out of six of our new recruits from Strathmore. The quality and integrity of Strathmore people is a good fit for GE,” added Mr. Konditi.

Also speaking at the launch, Deputy Vice Chancellor Prof. Izael da Silva envisioned the partnership as an opportunity for the University to take industry and commerce to a new level in the classroom. He noted GE’s global scale and its over 120 years experience as distinctive assets for the new partnership.

GE is the only company listed in the Dow Jones Industrial Stock Index today that also originally included in the index when it was inaugurated in 1896. GE operates in more than 100 countries and employs about 300,000 people worldwide.
