Globalization of Education: A Live Online
Debate

Bank/International Financial Corporation
The International Finance
Corporation (IFC) is hosting an international forum on investment in
private higher education taking place in
Washington
D.C. in late January. Part of
this forum includes a special event on the Globalization of
Education, which will be take place concurrently in Washington and
on the Web on January 23, 2004 at 8:30 am Washington time.
We invite you to
participate in the exploration of this topic online, and encourage
you to share the availability of this online forum with interested
colleagues.
The online Globalization
of Education event will have two parts:
- An online discussion
forum where friends of Strathmore may join others around the world
in discussing this topic in advance of the debate and posing
questions to panelists
- A live
webcast online on Friday, January 23rd where one can join others
in listening and participating in the debate over the web. A partner of IFC,
LearningTimes (www.learningtimes.net) will be hosting and
moderating the discussion.
Both elements of the
discussion are free, although virtual seating in the live webcast is
limited, so advance registration is
required.

If you are not already a
member of a LearningTimes Network community, click the "Join" button
and then follow Option A to create a free username and
password. If you are a

Logging in will give you
access to materials pertaining to the discussion, including an
audio-based overview of the forum and debate, backgrounds on the
debate panelists, and a Q&A area for posing questions and
sharing comments with panelists and fellow
participants.

The live webcast debate
takes place at 8:30 am EST
(Washington,
DC time) which is 1:30 pm GMT (Greenwich Mean Time).
Debaters will include
John Dawkins, former Australian Minister of Education, and Terry
Ryan, Chairman of Strathmore University’s Board of Trustees and a
Director with the African Centre for Economic Growth. As onsite
LearningTimes moderator, Paul Stacey will ask the debaters to
address questions from the pre-debate online Q&A forum and field
questions from onsite participants. Jonathan Finkelstein, also of
LearningTimes, will field and pose questions to the debaters from
online participants.

The debate will be
recorded so at its conclusion an "archive" will be available online
for anyone who missed it live or for those want to review the
discussion.
Technical
Requirements:
To participate in the
live online audio webcast, one simply needs a web-connected
computer, Internet access of 33 kbps or higher, the free Flash
plugin from Macromedia, and headphones or speakers. More specific details will
provided to you after you
register.
