Kianda College, now Strathmore
University’s School of Administration and
Management
An important part of Strathmore University’s history is its close
association with Kianda College of Secretarial Management. Founded
in 1961 as Kenya’s first racially integrated school for women,
Kianda College provided training for local women administrative
secretaries at a time when the field was completely occupied by
foreign expatriates. Kianda thus trained secretaries who integrated
the profession and filled the extensive vacancies left by departing
expatriates at the critical time of Kenya’s independence.
Many administrative posts in the public and private sector of the
newly independent state were filled by Kianda graduates. Now Kianda
graduates can be found in administrative posts all over Africa, from
Permanent Secretaries in Botswana and Tanzania to Ministers in
Uganda. Kianda graduates also founded Lagoon College in 1970, a
similar college in Lagos,
Nigeria.
As the administrative secretarial profession evolved in Kenya,
Kianda elevated its course of study to managerial administration and
information technology. In 1991 Kianda joined forces with Strathmore
University when it moved to its current Madaraka campus. Kianda’s
legacy continues as Strathmore University’s School of Administration
and Management, which provides corporate training and is headed by
Kianda staff members and graduates. Strathmore University proud
includes all Kianda’s graduates as members of its alumni
family.
